Thanks for Sharing (2013)

Thanks for Sharing is special because it treats a loaded subject with an unexpectedly tender, grown-up sense of humor, letting you laugh without ever laughing at the characters. Set against the everyday bustle of New York, it follows three people in recovery as they try to build honest lives and real intimacy, and the film’s strength is how warmly it observes the messy, unglamorous work of change. Mark Ruffalo brings a bruised decency that’s easy to root for, Tim Robbins adds quiet gravity, and the ensemble keeps the tone humane even when the material gets raw. It’s not for everyone—there’s frank sexual talk and some uncomfortable behavior—but if you’re on the fence and want a romantic dramedy that actually has something to say about accountability, connection, and relapse, this one earns your time.

Thanks for Sharing is clearly trying to humanize sex addiction through a rom-com-friendly lens, mixing 12-step camaraderie with messy, adult relationship drama. The problem is it often can’t decide whether it wants to be cheeky and charming or raw and serious, so the tonal whiplash can make the heavier moments feel undercut and the lighter ones feel a bit uncomfortable. It’s also more surface-level than you might hope, skimming big issues with earnest speeches and uneven pacing instead of digging into them with real insight. Still, the cast (especially Ruffalo and Robbins) brings warmth and credibility, so if you’re okay with an R-rated, talky dramedy that’s more well-intentioned than sharp, you may find it worthwhile; if you want either a genuinely funny comedy or a truly probing drama, this likely won’t satisfy.
