Cyberbully (2011)

Cyberbully captures something chillingly modern: the way a screen can turn a teenage mistake, rumor, or lie into a full-time siege with no safe place to hide. Emily Osment gives a raw, grounded performance that makes the emotional spiral feel painfully real, while the film’s TV-movie simplicity becomes a strength—direct, urgent, and focused on the human cost rather than flashy twists. It’s tense and often upsetting, but it also makes room for empathy, accountability, and the hard work of rebuilding after public humiliation. Not everyone will want to sit through its heavy subject matter and suicidal ideation, yet if you’re on the fence, this is the kind of drama that can genuinely change how you think about what “just online” really means.

Cyberbully is clearly trying to be a wake-up call about how fast online cruelty can escalate and how adults, schools, and laws often lag behind, and it does land some emotionally raw moments thanks to Emily Osment’s committed performance. But it’s also very much a “message first” TV movie, with broad villains, convenient turns, and dialogue that can feel like it’s explaining the issue rather than letting it unfold naturally. If you’re looking for nuance, subtle character work, or a realistic depiction of how institutions actually change, this may feel simplistic and a bit preachy. Still, if you want a straightforward, cautionary drama to spark conversation with teens (and you’re prepared for intense bullying and suicidal ideation), it does its job.
