Trance (2013)

Trance is the kind of thriller that feels like it’s been wired directly into your nerves: slick, propulsive, and constantly slipping the rug out from under your assumptions without turning into a smug puzzle box. Danny Boyle directs with a neon-lit, pulse-racing confidence, turning hypnosis, memory, and desire into a seductive maze where every scene seems to carry a hidden second meaning. James McAvoy brings a jittery vulnerability, Vincent Cassel radiates predatory cool, and Rosario Dawson anchors the film with a magnetic authority that makes the psychological games feel dangerously intimate. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to erotic intensity and violence, but if you like your crime mysteries stylish, twisty, and a little trippy, this one is a wickedly entertaining ride.

Trance is Danny Boyle trying to mash up a slick heist thriller with a hypnotic mind-game mystery, and on a surface level it’s stylish, sweaty, and confidently performed by McAvoy, Cassel, and Dawson. The problem is the script keeps piling on twists and psychological mechanics that start to feel more like noise than tension, so if you want a clean, coherent thriller with characters you can emotionally latch onto, this may leave you cold. It’s also heavy on erotic content and harsh violence, and those elements can feel more provocative than purposeful depending on your tolerance for “edgy” thrills. If you’re in the mood for a glossy, chaotic puzzle box and don’t mind some narrative muddle, it can be a fun ride; if you value clarity and depth over trickery, you’ll probably be irritated.
