Sinister (2012)

Sinister is the rare horror film that doesn’t just startle you—it seeps under your skin and stays there, built on an atmosphere of creeping, inevitable dread that feels almost tangible. Scott Derrickson turns the true-crime setup into a slow-tightening vice, and Ethan Hawke anchors it with a performance that makes the obsession feel human, messy, and believable rather than movie-brave. The tone is grim, moody, and unnervingly intimate, with scares that land because they’re earned, not spammed, and a mystery that keeps pulling you deeper without cheap answers. It’s not for viewers who prefer lighter, wink-at-the-camera horror, but if you want a film that feels like a nightmare you can’t fully shake off, this one delivers.

Sinister is clearly aiming for that nasty, slow-burn dread of a true-crime obsession curdling into something supernatural, and for a while it absolutely delivers with grim atmosphere and Ethan Hawke doing solid, stressed-out work. The problem is it often asks you to forgive some pretty convenient, “why would any sane person do that?” decisions, and it leans hard on jump scares once the mystery stops carrying the weight. If you love creepy imagery and a relentless sense of menace, you’ll probably have a good time; if you’re allergic to horror clichés and need a tight, satisfying finish, this may leave you more annoyed than scared. It’s effective in bursts, but not as smart as it wants you to think it is.
