Trash (2014)

Trash is the kind of propulsive, big-hearted thriller that reminds you why movies about young heroes can feel so urgent: it drops you into the heat and grit of Rio and then barely lets you breathe as three boys turn a simple find into a moral reckoning. Stephen Daldry shoots and cuts it with kinetic clarity, so every chase and close call has snap and momentum, while the mystery unfurls cleanly enough to keep you leaning forward without ever feeling mechanical. What really sells it, though, is the central trio—raw, funny, and fiercely believable—making the stakes feel personal even when the story widens into a portrait of corruption. It is intense and occasionally rough (the R rating isn’t decorative), but if you can handle the language and violence, it’s an exciting, surprisingly moving ride with real pulse.

Trash is clearly trying to be a scrappy, kid-led thriller with a conscience—part adventure chase, part anti-corruption fable set against the grit of Rio. The problem is it often feels like it’s pushing buttons rather than earning them: the plotting gets messy, the tone leans hard into sentiment, and the “poverty as backdrop for inspiration” vibe can come off more packaged than honest. If you’re sensitive to stories that flirt with exploitation or you’re tired of familiar “good kids vs. rotten system” beats, this may feel derivative and self-important. Still, the young leads bring real energy, and when the film keeps it simple—danger, friendship, momentum—it can be genuinely tense and watchable.
