Afro Tanaka (2012)
Hiroshi Tanaka sports an intense perm which looks like the afro hairstyle favored by some African-Americans back in the 1970's. He doesn't get his hair done at a hair shop, he was actually born with his hair like that. For freedom, Hiroshi moves to Tokyo. He works hard there and, even though he turns 24, he still doesn't have a girlfriend.
What people think about Afro Tanaka
Afro Tanaka is special because it takes a walking punchline—a guy born with an unapologetic, gravity-defying perm—and turns him into someone you end up rooting for with real affection. Shota Matsuda plays Hiroshi as a lovable mess in the best way: earnest, awkward, and just self-aware enough to make his stumbles feel human rather than cruelly comic. The vibe is breezy and goofy with a Tokyo slice-of-life texture, but it keeps sneaking in little jabs of pathos about loneliness, growing up, and the quiet courage it takes to keep putting yourself out there. If you’re allergic to cringe comedy or secondhand embarrassment, it may test you, but if you like romances that earn their sweetness and comedies that don’t forget the heart, this one lands with a surprisingly satisfying, slightly rule-breaking grin.
Afro Tanaka is trying to be an offbeat, coming-of-age rom-com about a socially awkward guy chasing “freedom” in Tokyo, using his naturally ridiculous afro as both a gag and a symbol. The problem is the comedy often leans hard into dumb, corny, over-the-top bits that can feel exhausting if you’re not on its wavelength, and the romance doesn’t always land because the female lead is pretty underwritten. There’s also a plot turn that some people find more frustrating than meaningful, which can sour the payoff if you’re expecting a satisfying emotional arc. If you like broad, manga-style humor and don’t need deep character work, you might have a good time—but if you want grounded romance or sharper writing, this probably isn’t for you.
