Flight (2012)

Flight is special because it uses a white-knuckle survival story as the doorway into something rarer: a clear-eyed, deeply human look at a man who can perform miracles in a cockpit but can’t outrun himself on the ground. Robert Zemeckis stages the infamous crash with nerve-rattling precision, then smartly lets the film settle into a tense, intimate drama where every conversation feels like it has stakes. Denzel Washington is electric as Whip Whitaker—charming, terrifying, funny, and heartbreaking sometimes in the same breath—while Don Cheadle and Kelly Reilly bring a steady, lived-in realism that keeps the movie from slipping into easy hero worship. It’s not for viewers who want a straightforward aviation thriller or a sanitized addiction tale, but if you’re open to a provocative character study with real momentum, Flight grips you and doesn’t let go.

Flight wants to be less an aviation thriller and more a bruising character study about addiction, denial, and the cost of being called a “hero,” and it mostly succeeds on the strength of Denzel Washington’s magnetic, messy performance. Just don’t go in expecting airtight realism or a tightly plotted procedural: the writing can feel on-the-nose, some beats are predictable, and the story occasionally leans on convenience to get where it’s going. The opening disaster is gripping, but much of the film is a sober (sometimes repetitive) march through consequences, and the ending won’t satisfy anyone looking for neat catharsis. Worth your time if you’re up for an adult drama about self-destruction and accountability, but if you’re aviation-minded, sensitive to heavy substance abuse, or want subtle character work, this may irritate more than it moves you.
