Quicksand (2023)

Quicksand takes a deliciously pulpy, B-movie hook—a couple literally sinking into trouble—and treats it with surprising seriousness, turning a simple survival setup into something tense, sweaty, and emotionally bruising. Set against the oppressive beauty of the Colombian rainforest, the film wrings real suspense from small, desperate decisions, and it helps that Carolina Gaitán and Allan Hawco commit so fully you can feel every argument, every compromise, every gasp for air. The vibe is lean and claustrophobic, more about endurance and relationship pressure-cookers than flashy horror tricks, with the jungle itself becoming an unforgiving antagonist. If you want a high-concept thriller that stays grounded in character (and don’t mind strong profanity and a few intense moments), this one earns its grip on you.

The problem is it often feels like the movie is doing the work for you—spelling out emotions and conflicts with clunky dialogue—while the direction struggles to turn a great “stuck in one place” setup into sustained tension.
