Kevin Ko builds dread the way a ritual builds power: through repetition, small details that start to feel dangerous, and an atmosphere so immersive you may catch yourself glancing away even when nothing “happens.” Ina Tsai anchors the frenzy with a raw, protective desperation that makes the fear feel human, not just theatrical, and the film’s fractured timeline keeps tightening the noose without handing you easy answers. Incantation is clearly trying to be an immersive, “you’re part of it” found-footage curse story, using chants, symbols, and a fractured timeline to make the horror feel personal. When it works, it’s genuinely unsettling, with strong atmosphere and some nasty imagery that sticks, especially if child-in-peril material hits a nerve for you. The problem is it often leans on familiar genre tricks and the non-linear, “missing footage” approach can feel more confusing than cleverly mysterious, with logic gaps that may pull you out instead of drawing you in. If you want tight rules, clean storytelling, and fresh scares, you might leave annoyed; if you’re okay with messy-but-creepy mood horror and can handle disturbing ritual themes, it’s still a solid late-night watch.
