Hiroki Narimiya makes Phoenix Wright an underdog you can root for, while the film’s eccentric touches (including spiritual intrigue) give the mystery a pulpy, page-turning momentum even if you’ve never touched the games. If you need your crime dramas strictly realistic, this may be too heightened for your taste—but if you’re open to a faithful, stylish legal rollercoaster, it’s an easy case to take.

Ace Attorney is clearly trying to bottle the games’ mix of courtroom melodrama, broad comedy, and heartfelt character bonds, and Takashi Miike leans into the heightened, cosplay-adjacent vibe rather than sanding it down. The problem is that what feels snappy and playful in a game can land long and oddly flat here, with uneven pacing and stretches that play more like dutiful plot delivery than gripping mystery.
