The Judge (2014)

David Dobkin keeps the storytelling polished and approachable, and Thomas Newman’s score gives the small-town atmosphere a gentle ache that lingers after the credits. It’s a crowd-pleasing drama that doesn’t pretend to reinvent the genre, but if you’re in the mood for strong acting, emotional honesty, and a courtroom story with real human stakes, it’s absolutely worth your time.

The Judge is clearly aiming for a big, old-school tearjerker that blends courtroom fireworks with a thorny father-son reckoning, and you can feel it straining for prestige at every turn. The problem is the writing leans hard on familiar beats and convenient twists, so what should feel raw and specific often comes off calculated and a bit corny, with a runtime that lingers long after you’ve gotten the point. If you want a sharp legal thriller or a subtle family drama, this may frustrate you with its formula and sentimentality. Still, Downey Jr. and Duvall do real work here, and when the movie stops pushing and just lets them share the screen, it briefly becomes the film it thinks it is.
