What people think about Phone Call to the Bar
Phone Call to the Bar is the kind of crime film that sneaks up on you with charm: a hard-boiled detective story that’s just as happy to savor neon-lit atmosphere and sly humor as it is to chase danger through Sapporo’s Susukino district. Yo Oizumi makes the private eye feel lived-in and likable, and the banter with Ryuhei Matsuda’s driver gives the movie a buoyant pulse even when the shadows start to lengthen. The cinematography and music do more than decorate the plot—they create a smoky, late-night vibe that makes you want to linger at the bar and follow the clues. If you’re looking for a grim, ultra-serious noir, this may feel too playful, but if you want an entertaining, stylish mystery with personality to spare, it’s an easy call to pick up.
Phone Call to the Bar wants to be a smoky, hard-boiled crime yarn set in Susukino, leaning on mood, booze-soaked banter, and the pull of a seemingly simple job that turns messy. The problem is the mystery doesn’t always hold together: the plot can feel holey and unfocused, and the pacing drags long enough that whatever tension it builds tends to leak out halfway through. It also wears its noir influences so openly that it can come off more like an imitation than a fresh take, and the serious tone doesn’t always match the thin character development. If you’re here for tight storytelling and escalating stakes, you’ll likely get restless, but if you can enjoy Yo Oizumi and Ryuhei Matsuda hanging out in a stylish, late-night atmosphere, there’s still something to sip on.
