Mr. Dough and the Egg Princess (2010)

Mr. Dough and the Egg Princess is Miyazaki in miniature form: a brisk, wordless-feeling fable where every gesture, texture, and gust of wind seems lovingly observed, turning a simple escape into something quietly exhilarating. Its old-European mill setting has the tactile charm of flour dust and creaking wood, while the animation delights in motion—kneading, rolling, scrambling—until even a blob of dough becomes a character you can’t help but root for. Joe Hisaishi’s arrangement of Vivaldi’s La Folia gives the whole short a buoyant, storybook pulse, making the chase-and-wonder vibe feel both playful and a little uncanny. It’s not a sprawling epic and it won’t answer every question it raises, but if you want a concentrated hit of imagination, warmth, and craft, it’s a small gem that goes down easy and lingers like a perfect bite of something fresh from the oven.

Mr. Dough and the Egg Princess is clearly aiming for a simple, fairy-tale escape story with Miyazaki’s playful imagination, expressive animation, and a classical score that gives the whole thing a charming, storybook lift. But it’s a very slight experience: the plot is basically “run, chase, run again,” with minimal character depth and not much emotional payoff compared to his bigger, richer films. If you’re expecting a full-length adventure, big themes, or a deeply satisfying arc, you’ll likely feel shortchanged. If, however, you’re happy to spend a brief stretch in a whimsical world with inventive visuals and a gentle, energetic mood, it can be a pleasant little bite rather than a full meal.
