The Loft (2014)

The Loft is a sleek, nasty little thriller that turns a glossy penthouse and a “perfect” secret into a pressure cooker of suspicion, guilt, and male ego. Director Erik Van Looy knows how to hook you early and keep tightening the screws, using sharp flashbacks and elegant, chilly cinematography to make every corner of that beautiful space feel like a trap. The fun is watching a well-chosen cast—Karl Urban and James Marsden especially—play men who think they’re in control until the mystery forces them to look at one another (and themselves) with fear and contempt. It’s definitely not for the squeamish or the prudish, but if you like twisty, adult suspense where paranoia is the real villain, this one makes a satisfyingly tense night in.

The problem is it often mistakes sleaze and constant plot-twisting for genuine tension, so the characters can feel more like chess pieces than people you care about, and the movie keeps over-explaining instead of letting suspense breathe. If you’re looking for a truly erotic thriller or a smart, clean mystery, this can come off messy, mean-spirited, and oddly dull between the reveals. Still, the premise is pulpy enough and the cast committed enough that if you enjoy glossy, trashy melodrama with a whodunit hook, you might get some guilty-pleasure mileage out of it.
