The Guillotines wants to be a gritty Qing-era action epic about loyalty, state violence, and a secret squad realizing they’ve become disposable, and the setup genuinely promises something sharp. Unfortunately, after a punchy opening it starts to feel like a tangle of political melodrama and rushed plot turns, with thin character work that makes the betrayals and sacrifices land softer than they should. Even the film’s signature flying-guillotine weapon, the thing you’re probably here for, is used less satisfyingly than you’d expect, so the action can feel oddly restrained between bursts of brutality. If you’re mainly after clean storytelling and emotional payoff, this may frustrate you; if you can tolerate messy pacing for stylish period visuals and occasional hard-hitting set pieces, you might still get some value out of it.
