Teen Spirit (2011)

Teen Spirit is a bubbly, surprisingly sweet afterlife comedy that takes the familiar high-school hierarchy and flips it into a redemption story with real heart. Gil Junger keeps the tone light and glossy like a late-night comfort watch, but beneath the jokes and prom-pageant sparkle there’s an honest little sting about friendship, popularity, and what it costs to be “on top.” Cassie Scerbo is perfectly cast as the queen bee forced into humility, and Lindsey Shaw gives the underdog arc a grounded charm that makes you want to root for her even when the makeover-magic gets messy. It’s not aiming for realism and it wears its TV-movie sheen proudly, but if you’re in the mood for a funny, feel-good fantasy with a conscience, it delivers.

Teen Spirit is aiming for a light, snarky teen afterlife comedy where a Regina George-type gets forced into doing one good deed and accidentally grows a conscience. The problem is it plays like a very familiar TV-movie remix of Mean Girls meets a watered-down supernatural morality tale, with broad characters, convenient plot turns, and a “lesson learned” arc you can see coming from a mile away. If you’re allergic to cheesy high school stereotypes, makeover montages, and fantasy rules that change whenever the story needs them, this will test your patience. That said, it’s brisk, occasionally funny, and the central odd-couple dynamic has enough charm to make it an easy background watch if you’re in the mood for something fluffy and undemanding.
