Big Ass Spider! (2013)

Big Ass Spider! is the rare creature feature that understands the assignment: take a gloriously dumb title, then deliver a movie that’s genuinely clever, brisk, and likable. Director Mike Mendez leans into the B-movie spirit with a wink, mixing crunchy monster mayhem with punchy comedy and an underdog hero you actually want to root for—Greg Grunberg’s cash-strapped exterminator makes the chaos feel oddly human. The vibe is playful and propulsive, with Los Angeles becoming a big, bright playground for escalating set pieces rather than a grim disaster zone, and the film’s charm keeps the momentum even when the effects show their seams. It’s not for viewers who want serious sci-fi or squeamish-free thrills (the PG-13 pushes into some nasty creature gore), but if you’re on the fence and in the mood for funny, fast, crowd-pleasing monster fun, it’s an easy yes.

Big Ass Spider! is clearly aiming for a throwback creature-feature with wink-wink B-movie energy: a giant monster, a scrappy everyman hero, and a lot of “can you believe this is happening?” banter. The problem is the movie often feels like it’s going through the motions, with a predictable escalation and jokes that don’t consistently land, so the camp can come off more flat than fun. There are a few redeeming bits—Greg Grunberg’s likable lead and some enjoyably goofy set pieces—but the tone wobbles between horror and comedy without nailing either. If you’re not already in the mood for intentionally cheesy monster mayhem (and some surprisingly nasty PG-13 gore), this probably won’t convert you.
