DC Showcase - Constantine: The House of Mystery (2022)
John Constantine wakes up in the eerie House of Mystery with no recollection of how he got there. Fortunately, Zatanna and his friends are all there. Unfortunately, they have a bad habit of turning into demons and ripping him to shreds, over and over again!
What people think about DC Showcase - Constantine: The House of Mystery
DC Showcase – Constantine: The House of Mystery is a wicked little animated fever dream that distills everything irresistible about John Constantine: razor-dry wit, occult dread, and the sense that every bargain has teeth. Dropping him into an eerie, looping nightmare of shifting allies and sudden brutality, the short builds a pulpy, horror-tinged atmosphere that feels claustrophobic in the best way, with crisp animation and shadowy visuals doing a lot of storytelling between the lines. Matt Ryan’s voice work anchors it with weary charm and bite, while the supporting cast adds just enough warmth and menace to keep you leaning forward. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s some nasty intensity and demonic violence—but if you like your DC animated fare darker, smarter, and steeped in supernatural mood, this one earns its chills and leaves you wanting the next chapter.
Constantine: The House of Mystery is clearly aiming for a nasty little supernatural loop story—part horror short, part dark joke—built around watching John get shredded and reset until he cracks the code. If you’re hoping for clever mystery-solving, rich character work, or a satisfying arc, the structure can feel repetitive and the writing leans more on bleak cynicism than sharp wit. The violence and gore are the point, not occasional spice, so if you’re sensitive to brutal imagery or just tired of “everything is miserable” DC side stories, this will likely feel like overkill. That said, Matt Ryan still nails Constantine’s weary charm, and if you want a grim, fast, hellish animated vignette rather than a full meal, it does deliver that vibe.
