Chappie (2015)

What makes Chappie special is how it smuggles a tender coming-of-age story into a gritty sci-fi action world, asking big questions about consciousness without forgetting to be exciting. Neill Blomkamp gives Johannesburg a lived-in, near-future texture, and the film’s visual panache makes its robot characters feel tactile and present rather than shiny abstractions. Sharlto Copley’s performance (through voice and motion) turns Chappie into something disarmingly childlike and soulful, while Dev Patel and Hugh Jackman embody the competing impulses—creation, control, and fear—that swirl around any new intelligence. It’s rough-edged, loud, and sometimes abrasive in tone, with real violence and coarse language, but if you’re open to a sci-fi crime tale with heart beating under its armor, it’s hard not to root for this strange little machine trying to become his own person.

The problem is it often feels like three different movies fighting for control—earnest AI coming-of-age, loud crime caper, and mech action—so the pacing lurches and the characters can come off more like ideas than people. A lot of the plot runs on convenience and questionable decisions, which makes the emotional beats harder to buy if you need tight logic. If you’re here for inventive robot design, a committed performance from Sharlto Copley, and don’t mind messy storytelling and abrasive energy, you may have fun; if you want a coherent, character-driven sci-fi drama, this will likely test your patience.
