Family Weekend (2013)
A 16-year-old girl takes her parents hostage after they miss her big jump-roping competition.
What people think about Family Weekend
Family Weekend is the kind of darkly fizzy family comedy that takes a relatable teenage ache—being unseen by the people who should notice you most—and turns it into something boldly, weirdly cathartic. Its hostage-premise sounds outrageous because it is, but the film plays it with a subversive, offbeat energy that keeps you laughing even as it nudges the story into honest, bruised emotions about attention, ambition, and neglect. Olesya Rulin makes Emily more than a gimmick, and Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Modine bring enough warmth and lived-in frustration to make the dysfunction feel human instead of cartoonish. It won’t be for everyone—some of the antics are deliberately abrasive and the content gets spiky—but if you like your comedy with a jagged edge and a surprisingly sincere heart underneath, this one earns your weekend.
Family Weekend wants to be a darkly funny, heartfelt wake-up call about a high-achieving teen who’s tired of being invisible, using an extreme “family intervention” to force everyone to finally pay attention. The problem is the film can’t decide whether it’s a sharp comedy, a serious drama, or a TV-style family lesson, so the tone lurches and the provocative hostage premise feels more like a gimmick than a fully earned story. The pacing drags in spots and the characters often come off as broad sketches, which makes the emotional payoff land softer than it should. If you’re allergic to dysfunctional-family clichés or don’t like comedy built around sedation, tying people up, and awkward sexual humor, this probably won’t be your weekend—but Chenoweth and Modine do bring enough energy to make a few scenes work.
