Unbroken (2014)

Angelina Jolie directs with a steady, classical confidence, turning open ocean and prison camps into vividly physical spaces you can almost feel, while Jack O’Connell anchors the film with a performance that’s more grit than speeches. The vibe is tense, spare, and ultimately stirring—built from survival, stubborn dignity, and the small choices that keep a person from being reduced to a number. It’s not for everyone given the repeated brutality and war violence, but if you can handle that intensity, it’s a handsomely made, quietly uplifting film that stays with you.

Unbroken is clearly aiming for an old-school, inspirational survival-and-resilience epic, and Angelina Jolie treats Zamperini’s story with sincere respect and polished craftsmanship. The problem is that it often plays like a handsome “prestige” checklist: long stretches of suffering and brutality are staged effectively but can start to feel repetitive, while the inner life of the man at the center stays oddly surface-level. If you want a psychologically rich war drama with moral complexity, this may feel flat and a bit sanctimonious, like it’s telling you what to admire rather than letting you discover it. Still, Jack O’Connell’s physical commitment and the film’s stark POW-camp atmosphere can make it worthwhile if you’re mainly here for endurance, grit, and survival spectacle.
