Blood & Gold takes the tired “last days of the war” backdrop and jolts it to life with the crackle of a pulp thriller that still remembers the human cost of every bullet. Peter Thorwarth directs with a propulsive, muscular confidence, keeping the story lean and twisty as it barrels from tense standoffs to bursts of brutal, well-staged action, anchored by Robert Maaser’s weary determination and Jördis Triebel’s fierce, grounded presence. The vibe is grimy and darkly entertaining—more grindhouse-adjacent survival tale than solemn history lesson—yet it’s shot through with war-weariness that makes the mayhem feel pointed, not empty. Fair warning: the violence is frequent and graphic, and there’s an attempted sexual assault scene, so it’s not for everyone, but if you want a fast, nasty, surprisingly involving wartime ride, it delivers.

Blood & Gold wants to be a pulpy, end-of-war revenge thriller with a moral bite: a deserter trying to find his daughter gets dragged into a village’s rotten secrets while sadistic SS men hunt stolen Jewish gold. It’s competently staged and moves at a brisk clip, with a few clever set-pieces and a satisfyingly hateful villain, but the story beats are familiar enough that you’ll often see the turns coming. The bigger issue is the sheer volume of gore and brutality—after a while the nonstop bullets, blood, and body parts start to feel less shocking and more tiring, especially with an attempted sexual assault scene that some viewers will find hard to stomach. If you’re in the mood for grindhouse-style wartime carnage with a straightforward plot, it delivers; if you want nuance, suspense, or emotional depth to match the setting, this may leave you cold.
