Gold (2016)
Kenny Wells, a modern-day prospector, hustler, and dreamer, is desperate for a lucky break. Left with few options, Wells teams up with an equally luckless geologist to execute a grandiose, last-ditch effort: to find gold deep in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia.
What people think about Gold
Gold is the kind of true-life-flavored adventure that feels like a fever dream of ambition, sweat, and bad decisions—powered by a gloriously unhinged Matthew McConaughey performance that’s as funny as it is desperate. Director Stephen Gaghan gives the story a propulsive, hustler’s rhythm, bouncing from jungle grit to boardroom swagger with a score that keeps the pulse racing even when the ground shifts under the characters. It’s less a traditional treasure hunt than a thriller about the intoxicating high of believing your own pitch, with Bryce Dallas Howard and Edgar Ramírez adding steel and skepticism around the whirlwind at the center. If you want a polished, tidy morality tale, this isn’t it—but if you’re in the mood for a sweaty, energetic ride about big dreams and bigger appetites, Gold is absolutely worth the trip.
Gold is clearly aiming to be a sweaty, stranger-than-fiction cautionary tale about ambition, greed, and the American hustle, with a big swing from jungle adventure to Wall Street circus. The problem is it often feels like two different movies stitched together, so the pacing lurches and the satire never lands with the bite it thinks it has. McConaughey commits hard and brings grimy charisma, and there are a few tense, enjoyably sleazy moments when the con starts to glitter, but the characters are drawn too broadly to make the fallout really sting. If you want a sharp, insightful corporate scandal drama, this may feel like a diluted remix; if you can settle for a messy, watchable ride powered mostly by performance and vibe, you’ll get more out of it.
