Benji (2018) earns its keep the old-fashioned way: with a scruffy little hero whose courage feels real, and a big-hearted belief that decency still matters. Set against a warmly photographed New Orleans that gives the adventure texture and color, the film balances cozy family charm with just enough crime-movie urgency to keep you leaning forward. It’s wholesome without being sugary, letting the kids’ bond with this orphaned pup land as something earned rather than manufactured. Fair warning: the kidnapping and a few animal-related moments can get genuinely tense for younger viewers, but if you’re on the fence and want a family film with spirit, this one has a winning, tail-wagging pulse.

Benji (2018) is aiming for a wholesome, old-school family adventure where a scruffy stray becomes the unlikely hero, and it mostly coasts on that “cute dog, big heart” energy. The problem is the storytelling is very simple and sometimes wildly convenient, so if you need believable stakes or nuanced characters, the kidnapping-and-rescue plot can feel preposterous and emotionally pushy rather than gripping. It also isn’t as gentle as the poster suggests: there are some genuinely tense moments (including a scary robbery/kidnapping beat and hints of animal mistreatment) that could rattle sensitive kids. Still, if you’re in the mood for an easy, sentimental crowd-pleaser and don’t mind being nudged to tear up on schedule, the dog performances and family-friendly intent do the heavy lifting.
