For more than a decade, parents Andy and Vicky have been on the run, desperate to hide their daughter Charlie from a shadowy federal agency that wants to harness her unprecedented gift for creating fire into a weapon of mass destruction. Andy has taught Charlie how to defuse her power, which is triggered by anger or pain. But as Charlie turns 11, the fire becomes harder and harder to control. After an incident reveals the family's location, a mysterious operative is deployed to hunt down the family and seize Charlie once and for all. Charlie has other plans.

Explained

What people think about Firestarter

Firestarter (2022) works best when it stops apologizing for being a rowdy, pulpy supernatural thriller and just lights the fuse—and in those moments it’s brisk, nasty fun with a drive-in heartbeat. Keith Thomas keeps the pace moving like a chase movie with a horror streak, building tension around a child’s volatile power and the adults desperate to control it, while Ryan Kiera Armstrong gives Charlie a fierce, wounded intensity that makes the danger feel personal, not just flashy. Zac Efron grounds the mayhem with a protective-dad urgency, and the film delivers a handful of sharp, mean-spirited scares that land because they’re simple and direct. It’s not for viewers who want subtle prestige horror or who are sensitive to brutal burn imagery, but if you’re in the mood for a lean, camp-tinged sci-fi fright ride that knows exactly what kind of movie it is, this one crackles.
