Bad Santa 2 (2016)

Bad Santa 2 is a Christmas movie with coal in its stocking and a wicked grin on its face: a mean-spirited, high-energy blast of black comedy that dares you to laugh at things you probably shouldn’t. Billy Bob Thornton slips back into Willie Soke like a dirty sweater that somehow still fits, delivering priceless reaction shots and weary, whiskey-soaked timing, while Tony Cox keeps the bickering partnership sharp and nasty. The real jolt of fun comes from Kathy Bates, who barrels in with fearless, gleefully toxic momentum, pushing the film’s vulgar little universe into even more outrageous territory without losing its comic rhythm. It’s absolutely not for anyone allergic to crude sex jokes, constant profanity, and deliberate bad taste—but if you want a holiday antidote that’s committed to going too far, it delivers with gusto.

Bad Santa 2 is clearly trying to recapture the original’s nasty, anti-Christmas charm while adding a bigger heist plot and a sliver of redemption for Willie. The problem is it often feels like a checklist sequel: louder, cruder, and more repetitive, with jokes that land less often and a meaner, more joyless tone that can tip into misogynistic rather than merely outrageous. Billy Bob Thornton still sells the miserable-sleaze persona, and Kathy Bates brings some welcome bite, but the pacing drags and the story runs on fumes between shock gags. If you loved the first movie mostly for its unexpected heart and sharpness, this may feel like the same dirt without the spark; if you just want aggressively R-rated, no-boundaries holiday filth, you’ll probably get exactly what you came for.
