If you’re sensitive to stories that use tragic real-world backdrops as a catalyst, or you want nuanced moral complexity rather than broad, crowd-pleasing beats, this may leave you frustrated. Still, Billy Crudup sells the brokenness, the songs are genuinely listenable, and there’s a small, sincere charm in the band dynamics—just don’t go in expecting the film to stick the landing with the same confidence as its music.
