The Tuche Family (2011)

What makes The Tuche Family such an easy sell is its unapologetically broad, character-first humor: it’s less interested in clever one-liners than in letting a delightfully shameless clan bounce off a world that was never built for them. Jean‑Paul Rouve and Isabelle Nanty commit fully to the Tuches’ oddball warmth, turning what could’ve been a mean-spirited “poor people meet rich people” setup into something genuinely buoyant and, at times, oddly sweet. The vibe is loud, sunny, and cheerfully ridiculous as the family’s lottery-fueled leap to Monaco becomes a clash of manners, taste, and stubborn self-belief. If you prefer subtle satire, this may feel too cartoonish, but if you’re on the fence and want a fun, good-natured comedy that coasts on strong personalities and infectious momentum, it’s a very pleasant surprise.

The Tuche Family is aiming for broad, fish-out-of-water satire: a proudly work-averse, small-town clan suddenly dumped into Monaco’s polished wealth, with culture-clash chaos meant to do the heavy lifting. The problem is that the comedy often feels more like a string of obvious sketches than genuinely sharp jokes, so if you’re not immediately on board with loud, exaggerated caricatures, you may find yourself waiting for laughs that don’t really arrive. It does at least keep moving and doesn’t overstay its welcome, which helps when the humor is hit-or-miss. If you like goofy French populist comedy and don’t mind thin plotting, you might have a decent time; if you want clever satire or consistent punchlines, this probably isn’t for you.
