Inherent Vice (2014)
In Los Angeles at the turn of the 1970s, drug-fueled detective Larry "Doc" Sportello investigates the disappearance of an ex-girlfriend.
What people think about Inherent Vice
Inherent Vice is the rare mystery that feels like a whole time and place—sun-bleached, salt-air California drifting into paranoia—captured with Paul Thomas Anderson’s wonderfully textured, dream-logic direction. Joaquin Phoenix anchors the haze with a performance that’s both hilariously disheveled and oddly tender, making you care even as the case slips through your fingers like smoke. The movie’s humor is sly and loopy, the vibe is psychedelic but never empty, and the atmosphere is so thick you can practically taste the smog and incense. It’s not for everyone—if you need a clean, straight-line whodunit, this will feel delightfully (or maddeningly) sideways—but if you’re open to a funny, immersive noir that plays by its own rules, it’s a terrific ride.
Inherent Vice is clearly trying to be a hazy, stoned-noir riff on 1970s LA, where the mystery matters less than the vibe, the paranoia, and the sad comedy of a world slipping out of focus. The problem is it leans so hard into that fog that the plot can feel like it’s wandering in circles—convoluted, deliberately unclear, and paced in a way that tests your patience if you want clean payoffs. If you’re the type who needs a coherent case to follow and a story that tightens as it goes, this may come off more frustrating than intriguing. The redeeming side is that it’s often funny, oddly soulful, and packed with great performances and atmosphere—just don’t expect it to hold your hand.
