Kill List (2011)
Nearly a year after a botched job, a hitman takes a new assignment with the promise of a big payoff for three killings. What starts off as an easy task soon unravels, sending the killer into the heart of darkness.
What people think about Kill List
Kill List is the rare thriller that starts with the grit of a hard-boiled crime drama and, almost imperceptibly, tightens into something far more nightmarish—without ever feeling like it’s cheating. Ben Wheatley builds dread the way pressure builds in a sealed room: through uneasy domestic scenes, pitch-black humor, and a creeping sense that every “simple” job is wired to something larger and uglier. Neil Maskell is terrific as a man whose violence feels less like a skill than a sickness he can’t stop scratching, and the film’s atmosphere—cold, grubby, and ominously ordinary—makes the shocks land with bruising force. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to bleakness, but if you want a slow-burn descent that pays off with bold, unforgettable horror, this one lingers like a bad dream you can’t quite shake.
Kill List is trying to be a grimy crime thriller that quietly mutates into something far nastier, using dread, symbolism, and domestic pressure to make you feel trapped alongside its damaged hitman. The problem is it’s deliberately opaque: key motivations and “what’s really going on” are kept just out of reach, so if you need clean answers or a tightly explained plot, it can feel like the film is withholding rather than intriguing. The violence isn’t just intense, it’s punishing and ugly, and the tonal swerve into horror can come off as a rug-pull if you expected a straightforward contract-killer story. That said, the performances and raw, lived-in atmosphere are strong, and if you enjoy bleak, unsettling films that prioritize mood and shock over clarity, it may land exactly as intended.
