The Vault (2017)
Two estranged sisters are forced to rob a bank in order to save their brother. But this is no ordinary bank.
What people think about The Vault
The Vault is special because it takes the familiar ticking-clock mechanics of a bank heist and quietly poisons them from the inside, turning greed and desperation into something genuinely uncanny. Dan Bush keeps the tension tight and claustrophobic, letting the fluorescent calm of the bank feel like a trapdoor to a darker history, while the genre mash-up never feels like a gimmick—it’s a heist movie that keeps finding new ways to make you uneasy. The younger cast sells the strained family dynamics with conviction, and James Franco adds a slippery, watchable edge that keeps you guessing about who’s really in control. If you like horror that creeps in through atmosphere and escalating dread rather than nonstop gore, this one’s an easy recommendation; if you prefer your heists strictly grounded, the supernatural bend may not be your flavor.
The Vault is clearly aiming for a slick mash-up of bank-heist tension and supernatural horror, with a fun “don’t go in that basement” hook and a few creepy visual ideas. The problem is the execution: it often feels like a straight-to-rental thriller, with predictable turns, choppy pacing, and plotting that doesn’t build dread so much as shuffle people into the next scare. James Franco and the central sister dynamic add some watchable moments, and the 1980s-tinged mystery is a decent concept on paper, but the film rarely delivers the punch that premise promises. If you’re after tight heist mechanics or genuinely unsettling horror, this may feel undercooked; if you’re okay with a modest, familiar genre ride for a late-night watch, it might do the job.
