Clown (2014)
A loving father finds a clown suit for his son's birthday party, only to realize the suit is part of an evil curse that turns its wearer into a killer.
What people think about Clown
Clown takes one of pop culture’s silliest icons and twists it into a grim, sticky nightmare of body horror that’s both mean-spirited and weirdly tragic, anchored by the simple dread of a good dad losing control of his own skin. Jon Watts keeps the vibe nasty and claustrophobic, letting practical effects do the heavy lifting as the suit becomes less a costume than a prison you can almost feel tightening with every scene. It’s the kind of horror-thriller that doesn’t rely on winks or irony—just an ugly, old-fashioned monster-movie inevitability, shot with enough style to make the darkness feel lived-in. Fair warning: the violence is graphic and the film goes to places that will be a hard no for viewers sensitive to harm involving children, but if you want a bleak, effective curse story with crunchy gore and committed creature work, it delivers.
Clown is clearly aiming for a grim, body-horror twist on the “dad just wants to do right by his kid” premise, turning a silly birthday staple into a nasty curse movie. The problem is that while the setup is strong, the characters and drama are pretty thin, so a lot of the runtime feels like the film is going through the motions between shock beats rather than building real dread. It’s also relentlessly mean-spirited and graphically violent, with harm to children and extreme gore that will be an instant dealbreaker for many viewers. If you’re here for a simple, grimy creature-feature with some memorable makeup work and Peter Stormare bringing a bit of punch, you might get what you came for—but if you want smart writing, tonal finesse, or horror that earns its brutality, this may feel like a wasted concept.
