Odd Thomas (2013)
In a California desert town, a short-order cook with clairvoyant abilities encounters a mysterious man with a link to dark, threatening forces.
What people think about Odd Thomas
Odd Thomas has a rare gift for turning a supernatural thriller into something unexpectedly warm and humane: it’s pulpy and propulsive, yes, but it’s also anchored by Anton Yelchin’s irresistibly earnest charm, making the weirdness feel personal instead of gimmicky. Stephen Sommers keeps the vibe brisk and playful in the shadows, mixing mystery beats with inventive, sometimes striking visuals—especially whenever the ominous bodachs drift into frame like bad news with a pulse. Willem Dafoe brings a steady, lived-in authority, and the romance at the center gives the story a sweetness that makes the danger matter. If you want grim horror, this isn’t that; it’s a likable, witty, PG-13 supernatural ride that’s easy to watch and hard not to root for.
Odd Thomas is clearly aiming for that sweet spot where a supernatural mystery, small-town charm, and comic-book-ish thrills all coexist, and Anton Yelchin’s likability does a lot of heavy lifting to keep you invested. The problem is the movie can’t quite decide what it wants to be—quirky romance one minute, grim thriller the next—so the tone lurches around and the pacing feels oddly rushed and sluggish at the same time. The writing leans hard on voiceover to explain what should be shown, and the plot beats can feel a bit mechanical if you’ve seen similar “gifted outsider stops a catastrophe” stories. If you want a tight, genuinely scary mystery, this may frustrate you, but if you’re okay with a messy, earnest supernatural ride carried by a strong lead and a few fun, eerie visuals, it’s an easy-enough watch.
