Muzzle (2023)

Muzzle has the rare grit of a street-level thriller that feels like it’s been dragged through the same cracked sidewalks and fluorescent backrooms it depicts, and that rough-edged authenticity is exactly what makes it pop. Aaron Eckhart throws himself into Jake Rosser with a bruised, committed intensity, and the film’s dog-centered bond gives the familiar “broken cop” template real emotional bite instead of empty machismo. Director John Stalberg Jr. keeps the pace tight and the atmosphere grimy, finding inventive, nerve-jangling ways to turn Los Angeles into a maze of pressure, paranoia, and institutional rot. Fair warning: the violence is harsh and the subject matter isn’t cozy, but if you want an action-thriller that feels mean, urgent, and oddly heartfelt, this one earns your time.

Muzzle wants to be a gritty, street-level revenge thriller with a wounded cop, a K-9 bond, and a “the system is rotten” conspiracy threaded through Los Angeles. The problem is it keeps piling on plotlines—therapy, cartel angles, corruption, personal fallout—without giving any of them enough room to land, so the movie can feel messy and oddly forgettable even when it’s trying to be intense.
