The Little Prince (2015)

The Little Prince (2015) is one of those rare family films that feels like it’s speaking gently to both the child you were and the adult you’ve become, wrapping a timeless fable in a new story about imagination under pressure. Mark Osborne’s direction turns the screen into a storybook of wonder, shifting between beautifully distinct animation styles that make every scene feel hand-crafted and quietly magical. It’s tender, funny in small, human ways, and unexpectedly moving—less a loud adventure than a warm, starlit reminder that efficiency isn’t the same thing as living. Fair warning: it carries some heavy emotions and themes of loss, so it may be intense for very young kids, but for anyone on the fence, its charm and heart make it well worth the trip.

The Little Prince (2015) clearly wants to honor the book’s gentle philosophy while also making it “work” as a modern family film, and the stop-motion sections in particular are genuinely lovely and heartfelt. The problem is the added contemporary framing story can feel like it’s underlining the message with a thick marker—earnest to the point of preachy—and the pacing can get repetitive as it circles the same lessons. If you adore the novella’s simplicity and ambiguity, you may find the extra plot and big emotional beats a bit too manufactured, like it’s explaining what the book trusted you to feel. Still, if you’re open to a softer, sometimes sad meditation on growing up (with mild but heavy themes for younger kids), there’s enough warmth and visual craft here to make it worth a cautious watch.
