Troll Hunter (2010)
A group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.
What people think about Troll Hunter
Troll Hunter is one of those rare found-footage films that feels newly imagined: it takes a shaggy student documentary setup and quietly steers it into something grand, funny, and unnervingly believable, as if Norwegian folklore just happens to be part of the bureaucracy. André Øvredal’s gift is tone—deadpan humor and creeping dread share the same frame—while Otto Jespersen’s weary, matter-of-fact hunter gives the movie an odd, human gravity amid the chaos. The landscapes are cold and beautiful, the creature work has real scale, and the scares land because the film treats its absurd premise with straight-faced specificity rather than winking at it. If you can’t stand shaky-cam or you want clean, traditional horror, it may test your patience, but if you’re on the fence, this is the kind of inventive monster movie that reminds you why “one more” late-night watch can turn into a favorite.
Troll Hunter is clearly trying to mash up a dry, deadpan Norwegian road-trip with found-footage creature horror, and when the trolls finally show up, the design work and scale are genuinely impressive. The catch is that it leans hard on mock-documentary conventions—shaky cameras, “just keep filming” logic, and lots of investigative trudging between payoffs—so if you’re allergic to found-footage habits, you’ll feel the runtime. The pacing can drag in the procedural travel stretches, and the scares are more “creature spectacle” than relentless tension. If you’re up for a quirky, folklore-flavored monster movie with occasional bursts of terror and a surprisingly funny, weary lead performance, it’s worth a look; if you want tight horror momentum, you may get impatient.
