Saltburn (2023)

Saltburn is the kind of film that grabs you by the lapels with sheer style—gorgeously shot, wickedly scored, and dripping with the decadent menace of a nightmare you can’t quite look away from. Emerald Fennell turns privilege into a playground of dark comedy and creeping dread, where every polite smile feels like a sharpened blade and every lavish room seems to hide a secret. Barry Keoghan is mesmerizing as an outsider whose hunger curdles into something unpredictable, while Jacob Elordi and a deliciously sharp Rosamund Pike make the aristocratic world feel both seductive and faintly rotten. It’s not for the squeamish—this movie courts discomfort on purpose—but if you’re in the mood for a bold, buzzy, beautifully made thriller-comedy that leaves a stain, Saltburn is absolutely worth the plunge.

Saltburn is aiming for a glossy, nasty little fable about class, desire, and obsession, staged like a decadent nightmare where everyone’s beautiful and slightly rotten. When it works, it’s because Emerald Fennell knows how to build a vibe: the estate is seductive, the performances commit, and the film has a bold “did they really just do that?” confidence. The problem is that the story often mistakes shock for substance—characters can feel more like mannequins for twists, and the satire is blunter than it thinks, so the big swings may land as try-hard rather than incisive. If you’re not up for explicit sex, uncomfortable bodily stuff, and a plot that prioritizes provocation over emotional logic, this will feel like two hours of being dared to be impressed.
