Unhuman (2022)

Unhuman earns its bite by taking a familiar “teens versus monsters” setup and gleefully yanking it sideways, delivering a horror-comedy that’s more clever than it first appears. The vibe is brisk and mischievous—bloody when it needs to be, but powered by an infectious, high-school-from-hell energy that keeps the momentum humming. What really sells it is how game the cast is, leaning into the comedy without deflating the tension, so the laughs and shocks land in the same breath. If you want straight, grim zombie terror, this may feel too playful, but if you’re on the fence and craving a fresh twist on well-worn tropes, it’s an easy, entertaining watch.

Unhuman is clearly aiming for a snarky, teen-centric mashup of slasher horror and mean-spirited comedy, with a “survive the night” setup that wants to feel chaotic and fun. The problem is it often plays like a tired remix of better genre hits, with an uneven tone that can’t decide whether you should laugh at the characters or fear for them—and since many of them are pretty unlikable, you may end up rooting for no one. The first stretch is fairly conventional, and when the movie finally tries to shake things up, the twist can feel too late and a bit nonsensical rather than thrilling. If you’re happy with quick kills, familiar beats, and a few moments of energy, you might get a passable watch, but if you want smart scares, consistent humor, or characters you actually care about, this probably isn’t for you.
