Friends with Kids (2012)
In the wake of their friends' marriages and eventual offspring, longtime pals Julie and Jason decide to have a child together without becoming a couple. By becoming "time-share" parents, they reason, they can experience the joys of parenthood without significantly curbing their personal freedom. However, when Julie and Jason both become involved with others, they discover that they secretly harbor romantic feelings for each other.
What people think about Friends with Kids
Friends with Kids is a rare romantic comedy that actually sounds like adults talking—sharp, witty, and just honest enough to sting in the best way. It has the breezy charm of a hangout movie, but beneath the laughs it’s quietly observant about how marriage and parenthood rearrange friendships, desire, and self-image. The ensemble is terrific, with chemistry that feels lived-in rather than scripted, letting the humor land naturally and the emotional beats sneak up on you. If you want broad gags or fairy-tale romance, this may feel too conversational and real, but if you like smart, human comedy with a warm pulse, it’s an easy yes.
Friends with Kids is clearly aiming for a smart, grown-up riff on modern relationships and the fantasy of “having it all” without the messy commitment. The problem is it often plays like a very talky, very familiar rom-com dressed up as something bolder, with plot turns you can see coming a mile away. A lot of the heavy lifting is done by the cast’s natural charm, but the direction and story beats can feel generic and a bit uninspired, like the movie is coasting on its premise rather than digging into it. If you like relationship banter and low-stakes, conversational drama, you’ll probably be fine; if you want genuinely sharp insight or a fresh twist on the setup, this may feel like a waste of your time.
