Grimcutty taps into a very modern fear—the way a rumor can metastasize online and seep into family life—and turns it into a lean, nasty little creature feature with a surprisingly human pulse. John Ross builds an uneasy suburban vibe where the real dread isn’t just the monster’s jagged presence, but the widening gulf between parents and kids, and the film gets real mileage out of that tension without preaching. Sara Wolfkind anchors it with a grounded, sympathetic performance, while Shannyn Sossamon and Usman Ally make the parental panic feel unsettlingly plausible, giving the scares an emotional undertow. It’s not for viewers who dislike self-harm-adjacent imagery or want subtle, slow-burn horror, but if you’re in the mood for sharp, timely chills and a premise that feels ripped from the present tense, this one goes down fast and sticks around.

Grimcutty is clearly trying to tap into modern parental panic and internet-fueled hysteria, with a solid idea: fear itself becomes the monster. The problem is the movie explains its themes so loudly and so often that the tension leaks out, and the logic can feel wobbly enough that you’ll start questioning scenes instead of being scared by them. The creature design and attacks land more “goofy meme come to life” than genuinely unsettling for a lot of viewers, which makes the horror beats feel flat even when the violence gets sharp. If you like straightforward, message-forward horror with a teen lead and some decent momentum, you might get a serviceable watch, but if you want subtle commentary, tight writing, or truly chilling scares, this probably isn’t your night.
