Andrew Haigh’s direction is intimate and unshowy, letting Tom Cullen and Chris New build chemistry through conversation that’s funny, prickly, and startlingly honest, the kind of dialogue that reveals character the way a confession does. The vibe is naturalistic and emotionally precise: small rooms, late-night talk, and the ache of saying what you mean before time runs out. It’s also frank about sex and nudity, so it’s not for every viewer, but if you want a love story that respects adult complexity and leaves you feeling like you’ve actually met two people, Weekend is quietly unforgettable.

Weekend is aiming for something intimate and truthful: a small, real-time romance where two men talk, hook up, and accidentally crack each other open over the course of a couple of days. It’s beautifully acted and quietly observant, but it’s also very talky, low-plot, and emotionally subtle—if you want big romantic gestures, clear-cut catharsis, or a conventional love story, this will feel like watching people “almost” say what they mean for 90 minutes. The sex is explicit and frequent for a drama (including full frontal nudity), so if you’re not comfortable with frank, unglamorous intimacy on screen, it’s simply not your weekend.
