Purge (2012)

Purge is the kind of drama that doesn’t just tell you history happened—it makes you feel the weight it leaves behind, in the quiet rooms and guarded silences of people who survived it. Set against Estonia’s scarred past, it unfolds with a gripping, steadily tightening tension as two wounded women circle each other warily, their connection deepening in ways that are both moving and haunting. The acting is superb, capturing trauma not with speeches but with looks, hesitations, and the hard-won instinct to distrust. It’s an excellent, emotionally heavy film—unflinching about cruelty and exploitation—so it may be too intense for some viewers, but if you want a story that lingers long after the credits, it’s absolutely worth the watch.

Purge is clearly aiming for a grim, emotionally serious reckoning with Estonia’s trauma under Stalin, using a present-day encounter to peel back layers of guilt, survival, and family history. When it sticks to the historical material, it’s often the strongest—tense, raw, and haunting—but the modern-day thread can feel thinner and more like a device than a fully lived story, which leaves some characters undercooked. Be warned: the film leans hard into suffering, including harrowing abuse, and it doesn’t soften the blows or offer neat catharsis, so the ending may feel more shocking than satisfying. If you want a balanced, character-driven drama with breathing room and closure, this may frustrate you; if you can handle relentless darkness for the sake of historical weight, it has real impact.
