Piranha 3DD (2012)

Piranha 3DD is the kind of movie that knows exactly what it is—a shameless, neon-bright carnival of camp that winks at you even as it lunges for the jugular. John Gulager cranks the sequel knob toward gleeful self-parody, turning a water park into a splashy, ridiculous playground where the jokes are crude, the pace is brisk, and the mayhem is staged with an almost impish commitment to going too far. If you’re on the fence, the pleasure here isn’t suspense so much as the movie’s brazen confidence: it dares you not to laugh at its bad taste while it serves up one outrageous set piece after another. Fair warning, though—between the graphic gore and constant nudity, it’s strictly for viewers who want their horror loud, lewd, and proudly trashy.

Piranha 3DD is clearly trying to be a sleazy, self-aware theme-park splatter comedy that tops the previous film with bigger carnage, bigger bodies, and louder jokes. The problem is it often feels less like a clever wink and more like a messy shove: the direction is sloppy, the story is basically an excuse to hop between set pieces, and the humor leans crude without landing many genuinely witty punches. If you’re hoping for the first movie’s playful energy or any real suspense, this one can come off mean-spirited and exhausting rather than fun. Still, if you want shameless B-movie trash with tons of nudity and over-the-top gore and you’re not picky about coherence, it delivers exactly that.
