From the Head (2011)

George Griffith’s assured debut performance as Shoes is disarmingly warm and watchful, making you feel how a man can become everyone’s confidant while avoiding his own reflection, and the film’s sharp behavioral observations land with the sting of recognizable truths rather than cheap judgment. The vibe is intimate and low-key—more eavesdropping than spectacle—with Matthew Lillard adding a jolt of messy energy that keeps the night unpredictable. It’s not for viewers looking for big plot turns or a glossy, sensational take on the setting, but if you’re on the fence and want a contained drama that’s surprisingly diverting and empathetic, this one sneaks up on you.

From the Head is aiming for an intimate, talky character study set in the unglamorous margins of a Times Square strip club, using Shoes’ bathroom booth as a confessional for everyone else’s mess. The problem is that the movie often feels more alive when it’s listening to the parade of customers and coworkers than when it turns back to Shoes himself, so the supposed centerpiece can come off oddly muted.
