Tarzan (2013)

Tarzan (2013) takes a story you think you already know and gives it a sleek, modern jolt—part jungle fairy tale, part high-energy adventure—built for family viewing without sanding off the danger. The film leans into a pulpy, Saturday-matinee spirit: sweeping chases through lush digital landscapes, a clear-hearted romance with Jane, and a villain whose corporate greed feels satisfyingly hissable. It’s at its best when it lets the jungle feel alive and a little uncanny, turning nature into both playground and threat while Tarzan’s identity tug-of-war keeps the momentum grounded in emotion. The animation style won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and the story plays broadly, but if you want a brisk, PG crowd-pleaser with real peril, big set pieces, and a sincere heroic core, it’s an easy swing through the vines.

This Tarzan is clearly trying to modernize a classic with eco-corporate villains, big action beats, and a kid-friendly adventure tone, but the execution is where it stumbles. The animation often looks stiff and videogame-like, and the storytelling has a habit of over-explaining itself while still feeling oddly muddled, which drains tension instead of building it. If you’re expecting the emotional sweep, charm, or visual polish of the better Tarzan adaptations, this may feel like a bargain-bin imitation with lots of noise and not much spark. That said, younger viewers who just want nonstop jungle peril and a straightforward good-vs-evil plot might still find it passable for a lazy afternoon.
