Bernie is special because it turns a true-crime headline into a sly, humane small-town tapestry, where the humor comes from character and community rather than cheap shock. Richard Linklater directs with a storyteller’s ease, letting Carthage, Texas feel lived-in and oddly cozy even as the moral ground shifts under your feet, and he frames it all with a wry, quasi-documentary vibe that keeps you leaning in. Jack Black gives the performance of his career—so gentle, specific, and disarmingly sincere you almost forget you’re watching an actor—while Shirley MacLaine makes bitterness feel like a force of nature and Matthew McConaughey adds a drawling jolt of courtroom swagger. It’s dark, yes, and the subject matter isn’t for everyone, but if you like comedies with bite and dramas that trust you to sit with messy contradictions, this one is a real treat.

Bernie is clearly trying to walk a tightrope: a true-crime story told with Linklater’s folksy, semi-documentary charm, poking at small-town morality while keeping things oddly light on its feet. The problem is that the “charming” surface can feel emotionally distant, like you’re watching the town gossip about a tragedy rather than sitting inside it, and the pacing meanders in a way that blunts both the comedy and the drama. If you want a sharp, cathartic dark comedy or a tense murder story, this may leave you unsatisfied—its tone is deliberately off-kilter and often more sad than funny. That said, Jack Black is surprisingly controlled and compelling, Shirley MacLaine is deliciously thorny, and the local color is so specific it’ll work well for viewers who enjoy character-driven true-crime that’s more observational than suspenseful.
