Planes (2013)

Planes has a simple, old-fashioned kind of lift: it takes a small-town underdog with a big dream and turns the sky into a playground of color, speed, and pure movie-magic motion. The flight sequences are the real hook—clean, vibrant animation that makes every bank, dive, and near-miss feel like a roller-coaster you can actually follow—while the humor stays light and family-friendly without trying too hard to be hip. There’s an easygoing charm in the way Dusty collects friends and rivals across a globe-spanning race, and the film keeps its tone breezy even when it leans into a few sincere pep-talk moments. It’s not the most surprising story in the hangar, but if you’re in the mood for cheerful adventure, energetic aerial action, and a warm message about courage, it’s an enjoyable ride.

Planes wants to be an uplifting underdog sports movie for kids, swapping cars for aircraft and keeping the stakes friendly, colorful, and easy to follow. The problem is it often feels like a thinner, more commercial echo of better animated racers, with a predictable plot, broad character beats, and humor that rarely surprises. Some of the “world tour” flavor leans on stereotypes, so if that stuff annoys you, it’ll wear out its welcome fast. Still, the aerial racing sequences have a bit of zip and younger kids who just want bright planes, simple lessons, and light peril will probably have a perfectly fine time.
