Before I Fall (2017)

Before I Fall takes the familiar time-loop hook and turns it into something unexpectedly tender: a glossy, anxiety-tinged teen drama that keeps peeling back its own surface until it finds real feeling underneath. Zoey Deutch is terrific as Samantha, letting you watch confidence curdle into fear, then soften into empathy, with the kind of lived-in vulnerability that makes the fantasy premise feel personal instead of gimmicky. Director Ry Russo-Young gives the day a sleek, slightly haunted rhythm—bright hallways, loud parties, and small cruelties repeating until they start to sound like a conscience you can’t turn off. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to high school social politics or PG-13 partying, but if you want a smart, emotionally sincere YA film that actually earns its moral weight, this one sticks the landing.

Before I Fall wants to be a teen-friendly Groundhog Day with a conscience, using a time loop to push its popular-girl heroine toward empathy, accountability, and a more meaningful life. The problem is it often leans on familiar high-school stereotypes and predictable beats, so the “big realizations” can feel prepackaged rather than earned, and the pacing can drag as the same day repeats without enough fresh momentum. Tonally, it wobbles between glossy teen drama, bullying commentary, and fantasy thriller, which can make the story feel more muddled than haunting. If you’re looking for sharp writing or a genuinely surprising twist on the premise, you may leave annoyed, but if you can ride with the melodrama, Zoey Deutch brings enough charm and vulnerability to make parts of the journey watchable.
