Kill Boksoon is special because it treats hitwork and motherhood with the same sharp seriousness, then finds sly humor in the whiplash between them—one minute you’re watching a virtuoso at her trade, the next you’re feeling the quiet ache of a parent who doesn’t know what to say. Director Byun Sung-hyun stages action with crisp, almost playful precision, but he never lets the fights drown out what makes the movie stick: Jeon Do-yeon’s magnetic performance as a woman whose deadliest battles are fought across a kitchen table. Kill Boksoon wants to be a slick “assassin with a day job as a mom” thriller, mixing balletic violence with domestic drama and a dash of workplace satire. When it’s focused, it delivers: Jeon Do-yeon has real presence, and a few action set pieces are staged with enough style to justify the premise. But the film stretches itself thin with meandering pacing, familiar plotting, and an ending that can feel messy, as if it’s rushing to wrap up what it spent too long setting up—helped along by some occasionally cheesy effects.
