The Awakening (2011)
In post–War England, a writer and sometime-ghost hunter investigates a reported haunting at a boys boarding school.
What people think about The Awakening
The Awakening is the kind of old-fashioned ghost story Hollywood barely makes anymore: elegant, literate, and steeped in postwar melancholy, where every creaking floorboard feels like it’s carrying history. Nick Murphy builds dread patiently, letting the boarding school’s shadowy corridors and candlelit rooms do as much work as the score, and the cinematography is so handsome it practically dares you to lean closer. Rebecca Hall is terrific as a razor-minded skeptic whose composure is tested not by cheap shocks, but by the slow, unnerving sense that the past refuses to stay buried, with strong support from Dominic West and Imelda Staunton. If you want relentless gore or nonstop jump scares, this isn’t that kind of ride—but if you’re on the fence and crave a classy, suspenseful mystery with genuine atmosphere, it’s an easy recommendation.
The Awakening is aiming for a classy, post-war gothic mystery that leans more on atmosphere and grief than on cheap jump scares, and it does look the part. Rebecca Hall is genuinely compelling, and the boarding-school setting delivers some nicely eerie, old-fashioned tension. But if you want a horror-thriller that tightens the screws and pays off cleanly, the slow pacing and increasingly tangled final act may test your patience, especially since the twists can feel more “seen it coming” than shocking. Worth a try if you like moody, talky ghost stories and don’t mind a slightly derivative, tidy-up-the-plot ending; skip it if you’re here for sharp scares, momentum, or a truly satisfying reveal.
